The North Wales Regional Institute of Sport (NWRIS) was opened November 2007 to help identify elite athletes of the future.

The institute consists of sporting centres across North Wales, and will be managed from the Plas Menai Watersports Centre in Caenarfon, Gwynedd.

It has been established by the Sports Council for Wales with £250,000 of Welsh Assembly Government funding. The launch of the North Wales Regional Institute of Sport was attended by sports minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas.

He said it was good news for elite sport in North Wales. He added; The Welsh Assembly Government aims to provide more and better opportunities for young Welsh Athletes to reach their potential.

Our investment in establishing the North Wales Regional Institute of Sport demonstrates our commitment to achieving our aim.

Fulfilling potential

The institute made up of a "networking" different sporting centres across the region, hopes to identify sporting talent and to make sure athletes and their coaches receive the sporting and training facilities they need.

It also helps to help athletes balance their training with education.

The ultimate aim would be to increase the number of North Wales athletes representing Great Britain.

Huw Jones, Chief Executive of the Sports Council for Wales said; "This athlete-centered approach will enable elite athletes based in North Wales to access high levels of coaching and support services to give them the best possible opportunity to fullfil their potential".
